Day 941 since February 24th, 2022 941 день повномасштабної війни
Day 3881 since February 20th, 2014, Temporary Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation
Thank you to all who #StandWithUkraine
Greetings from Kamloops!
Newsletter Overview and Request:
I hope this message finds you well. As I return from my sabbatical, I would love to invite you to read the latest newsletter. I also have a request to the Kamloops community. I’m currently looking for someone interested in a paid opportunity to provide respite care for my Mama, primarily on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays during the fall term. Additionally, if anyone is interested, I have two bedrooms available rent-free in my basement for someone who can be present at home while I am involved in community work.
This support will become more critical starting in January when my teaching duties resume, though it is less urgent for this fall term. Kamloops community and home care provide some respite, but it’s not always guaranteed, so having more paid options and someone living in the basement would ensure better safety and flexibility.
After Ukraine’s victory, I plan to take my Mama to Ukraine and explore long-term care options after the visit. Until then, I would greatly appreciate any help or leads regarding what is available here in Kamloops.
Your support and any recommendations would be very helpful during this transitional period. Thank you in advance for your kindness and consideration!
Enjoy reading.

Stand with Ukraine TRU fund
The last fundraiser did not turn out very well. Although we raised $500 during the silent auction and with online donations getting closer to our goal of 25K (we currently have 17K), we will be unable to offer a scholarship this year. We have one more silent auction in November this year and will need to start planning 2025 activities to be able to have 25K for endowment + 1K to offer scholarship in 2025 by July 1st, 2025 (TRU deadline).
I want to thank Barb and Family, and Lynda for running the silent auction (it is a lot of work) and everyone who donated and bid during the August 24th event. We must utilize the resources as best as possible to avoid burnout as we have a limited number of donors and plan activities more sustainably for 2025 to reach our goal. Please let me know who is willing to help with the November fundraiser and think creatively about increasing the number of people attending fundraisers, donating and recognizing our supporters. War fatigue is real, and the same happens with silent auction fatigue. While ideas are important, we want to know who can put ideas into action to reach the goal.
ILOVEUKRENG Ukrainian Diaspora Language Learning Opportunity in Kamloops
The language classes are going well. We have ten learners joining us weekly in Kamloops. If you want to receive weekly updates via e-mail, I can add you to the #ILOVEUKRENG mailing list. If you think you might be able to join us on Zoom (classes are scheduled at 1:00 p.m. PT on Saturday), we can explore the option of on/off cohort learning via Zoom during the winter term. It is important that you know the alphabet, as we are working on building language vocabulary now.
This isn’t just another language class – it’s a chance to connect with Ukrainian culture, support a nation in struggle, and expand your linguistic horizons. Whether you’re of Ukrainian descent or simply curious about this rich culture, this course has something for everyone.
Kamloops Stand with Ukraine
We continue peaceful gatherings weekly, and all are welcome to join. If you have any questions for the upcoming provincial election you want to ask Kamloops candidates, please send me your ideas and I will reach out to all of them and share answers on my blog. We only have Randy Sunderman from BC Greens, who regularly stands with us, so if you want to support Randy and hear about his work, join us every Saturday. We are open to all candidates to join us and hope Kamloopsians will select provincial representatives who are committed to working with diverse groups of people of Kamloops and attending local peaceful gatherings. Thank you, Randy, for your support. Stand With Ukraine: Stories from British Columbia
I’m excited to share that we had two successful book launches for BC Stands with Ukraine: Volume 1—one in Kamloops and the other in Winnipeg. These events celebrated the power of community action in supporting Ukraine and were a wonderful opportunity to connect and share valuable insights from the book. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to promote this important work! Here is an article from the U of Manitoba book launch https://krasun.ca/2024/09/04/join-us-tonight-bridging-provinces-supporting-ukraine-a-social-development-perspective/ and book launch as part of the Ukraine Independence Day celebration: https://krasun.ca/2024/08/26/united-in-spirit-kamloops-shines-for-ukraines-independence-day/
The book is now available on Amazon Canada: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0DDY8K6TR and the ETSY Canada DROKACADEMY store: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/DROKACADEMY . All net proceeds will go towards the Stand with Ukraine TRU Scholarship fund.
I also encourage everyone to read the inspiring article The Welcome Tree: A Symbol of Unity and Hope for Ukrainian Refugees. This powerful story, often shared in my presentations about how British Columbia stands with Ukraine, highlights the remarkable efforts of the Comox community in supporting Ukrainian refugees through the planting of a Welcome Tree. It’s a symbol of unity and hope, reminding us of the importance of welcoming and supporting those displaced by war.
