🍁 Reflecting on Indigenous Peoples Day at Parc des Rapides, Montreal 🍁

Today, June 21st, is Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada – a day to recognize and celebrate the cultures, contributions, and resilience of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. It’s also the summer solstice, holding deep spiritual significance for many Indigenous cultures.

Before leaving Montreal, I had the privilege of visiting Parc des Rapides with Marsha’s family. This beautiful park offered profound connections to Indigenous history:

Archaeological evidence dates First Nations presence here back over 2,000 years, reminding us of their enduring connection to this land.

The park’s biodiversity reflects Indigenous knowledge and stewardship. The bird sanctuary especially highlights the deep spiritual and practical connections many Indigenous cultures have with local flora and fauna.

The Lachine Rapids, while challenging early European explorers, were skillfully navigated by Indigenous peoples for millennia.

Seeing Montreal’s skyline juxtaposed with this natural beauty made me reflect on how the land has changed since Indigenous peoples were its sole caretakers.

Visiting places like Parc des Rapides helps us appreciate the rich Indigenous history of the land we stand on and the ongoing importance of Indigenous cultures in Canada and globally.

This Indigenous Peoples Day and every day, I encourage everyone to:

Learn about the Indigenous history of your area
Support Indigenous-owned businesses and artists
Participate in local Indigenous Peoples Day events

How are you honouring Indigenous Peoples Day?
