From Lived Experience to Innovative Solutions: Celebrating Trevor Starchuk’s Award-Winning Addiction Recovery Housing Model

TRU Faculty celebrates Trevor’s award

By Dr. Oleksandr (Sasha) Kondrashov

As a social work educator, it is always inspiring to witness individuals who have demonstrated a deep commitment to addressing pressing social issues through innovative community-based solutions. Trevor Starchuk, now a dedicated social work student at Thompson Rivers University, exemplifies this passion through his groundbreaking housing model designed to support individuals recovering from drug addiction and reduce homelessness.

It is important to note that Trevor’s remarkable community research and the development of his inclusive healing community model were undertaken prior to his enrollment in the social work program. His work is a testament to his unwavering commitment to creating positive change, driven by his own lived experience and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those struggling with addiction.

I first learned about Trevor’s exceptional community work through Dr. Kathie McKinnon, who recognized his unique perspective and recommended that he submit a proposal to the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE-ACFTS) conference. After reading about Trevor’s community research, I also encouraged him to apply and submit the proposal for the Outstanding Student Award as his community work needs to be known and celebrated. Although I am currently on sabbatical and not teaching social policy courses, I had the privilege of meeting Trevor in person during a guest lecture in Dr. McKinnon’s class. His passion for making a difference was immediately apparent.

Earlier this month, I was thrilled to discover that Trevor had received an outstanding student proposal award from CASWE-ACFTS for his community work and his desire to continue learning and growing as a social work student. This well-deserved recognition highlights the significance of his inclusive healing community model, which seamlessly integrates various stages of recovery within a single location, providing a safe and supportive environment for individuals to progress at their own pace.

What sets Trevor’s approach apart is his ability to combine his lived experience with a deep understanding of the gaps in current systems of care. His community research, conducted before joining the social work program, involved analyzing coroners’ reports and surveys, which informed the development of his data-driven solution. The recent InfoTel News article https://infotel.ca/newsitem/kamloops-man-designs-innovative-award-winning-housing-model-for-addiction-recovery/it104779 showcasing Trevor’s work is a testament to the impact of his community engagement, although it does not explicitly distinguish between his prior achievements and his current pursuit of a social work degree.

As Trevor continues his social work education, I am excited to see how he will expand his knowledge and learn to conduct rigorous academic research, building upon the solid foundation of his community work. His commitment to creating change extends beyond the classroom, as evidenced by his role as the founder of Loud Voice Society, a collaborative effort bringing together professionals from various fields to address substance use and homelessness.

Trevor’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that meaningful change often begins at the grassroots level, driven by passionate individuals who are intimately familiar with the challenges faced by their communities. As he prepares to present his work at the prestigious Congress 2024 conference at McGill University, I am confident that Trevor’s insights will inspire both academics and practitioners, showcasing the transformative potential of community-driven solutions.

As an educator, it is a privilege to witness the growth and achievements of students like Trevor, who bring their community passion and lived experience into the academic realm. His dedication to making a difference, combined with his pursuit of a social work education, holds immense promise for the future of addiction recovery services and the field of social work as a whole.

Trevor Starchuk’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and the power of community-driven change. As he continues to refine his skills and knowledge through the social work program, I have no doubt that he will make an even greater impact, bridging the gap between community wisdom and academic rigour. I look forward to following Trevor’s journey and the positive change he will undoubtedly bring to the lives of those most in need.
