“Ruky Get’! and “Hands Off!”: A Ukrainian Language Guide for Protest, Solidarity, and Shrinking Care in America

Introduction: When Protest Speaks in Many Languages

On April 5, 2025, millions of people across the United States and around the world joined “Hands Off!” demonstrations against what organizers describe as a billionaire-led dismantling of American democracy (CNN, 2025; BBC News, 2025). The protest movement—responding to the Trump administration’s aggressive government downsizing, immigrant crackdowns, and systemic service cuts—marked the largest coordinated resistance since 2017.

In the spirit of solidarity, this post offers a Ukrainian language lens to the phrase “Hands Off!”, recognizing that protests are not only political expressions but also linguistic acts. Ukrainians, who have long resisted foreign domination and authoritarianism, know that words like “Руки геть!” carry deep historical and emotional weight.

This post also thanks the American people for recognizing that MAGA has morphed into MASS: Making America Super Small (Kondrashov, 2025)—a dangerous ideological project that redefines care as control and social services as threats.

Ukrainian Language Learning: 5 Ways to Say “Hands Off!”

Here are five Ukrainian translations of the phrase “Hands Off!”, each suited to a different tone or context. Understanding these helps deepen appreciation for how protest language works across cultures:

  1. Руки геть! (Ruky het!)
    Literal: “Hands away!”
Use: Most direct form; ideal for protest signs and chants.
  2. Не чіпай! (Ne chipai!)
    Translation: “Don’t touch!”
Use: Assertive boundary-setting, especially in interpersonal moments.
  3. Не лізь! (Ne liz’!)
    Translation: “Don’t interfere!”
Use: Pushes back against intrusion—used in tense debates or politics.
  4. Тримайся подалі! (Trymaysya podali!)
    Translation: “Stay away!”
Use: Defensive distancing in conflict or confrontation.
  5. Відступись! (Vidstupys’!)
    Translation: “Back off!”
Use: Direct confrontation; urgent and forceful.

Learning these expressions not only strengthens language skills—it invites us to understand how resistance is framed in the everyday vocabulary of people defending rights and dignity.

From MAGA to MASS: What Care Looks Like Under Threat

As Dr. Oleksandr Kondrashov outlines in his analysis of Trump’s 2025 executive orders and policies, the shift from “Make America Great Again” to “Make America Super Small” reflects an intentional redefinition of the state’s role in care and democracy (Kondrashov, 2025).

Rather than reforming or even neglecting systems of care, Trump’s actions weaponize government to actively dismantle them. This includes:

  • Eliminating federal diversity, equity, and inclusion programs
  • Suspending refugee admissions and foreign aid
  • Enabling mass layoffs of federal workers, including 121,361 employees (CNN, 2025)
  • Dismantling Social Security Administration services (CBC, 2025)

As Kondrashov (2025) describes, this signals a shift from performative care to what he calls a “Predatory Way”—where government authority is used to undermine care in service of nationalist, exclusionary goals.

Thank You to the American People

This blog post would not be complete without a sincere message to the hundreds of thousands who stood up and said “Hands Off!” across the U.S.

You are not alone. Ukrainians and Canadians see the erosion of democracy and care structures, and we recognize the courage it takes to fight back.
You are helping expose the truth: that MAGA has become MASS—and that the price of this transformation is being paid by the most vulnerable.

As one protester said:

“They tell us that immigrants are stealing our jobs, but they’re the ones shipping jobs overseas.” (CNN, 2025)

Your fight is global. Your message is heard. And we respond in kind:
“Руки геть від демократії!”Hands off democracy!

Conclusion: Language is Protest, and Protest is Care

Learning how to say “Hands Off!” in Ukrainian is more than an educational exercise—it’s an act of global literacy and solidarity. It reminds us that resisting authoritarianism is not just political; it is linguistic, cultural, and moral.

Together, across borders, we can defend care, uphold justice, and stand firm when power overreaches.
