As a proud Canadian citizen with Ukrainian roots, I find myself reflecting deeply on the meaning of independence and freedom this August 24, 2024. Today marks the 913th day since Russia’s full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. Even more sobering, it’s been 3,843 days since February 20, 2014, when Russia began its temporary annexation of Crimea.
These numbers aren’t just statistics; they represent years of struggle, resilience, and unwavering determination of the Ukrainian people. Many Ukrainians continue to live under occupation, unable to freely celebrate this Independence Day. Their plight reminds us of the true cost of freedom and the ongoing fight to preserve it.
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Michael Reeves and CFJC team for the recent interview and to all journalists who continue to raise awareness about russian aggression and Ukraine’s ongoing fight for independence. Your work is crucial in keeping the world informed and engaged.
Here in Kamloops, our Ukrainian community has grown to around 300 people. Many arrived seeking refuge, bringing with them not just Ukrainian rich culture and traditions, but also the heavy burden of war memories. The warmth and support of the Kamloops community have been invaluable, offering jobs and a sense of security to those who’ve had to flee their homes.
Every Saturday, without fail, we gather for what has become the longest-standing peaceful gathering in Western Canada. This consistent show of solidarity is our way of combating ‘war fatigue’ and reminding the world that Ukraine still needs support.
This year, we’ve organized a full day of events to celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day in Kamloops, and I invite everyone to join us:
1. Start your day with our Ukrainian Diaspora Language Class and E-Book Launch at 9:00 AM on Zoom.
2. Attend a special Joint Prayer Service at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church at 10:30 AM.
3. Join our Stand with Ukraine Celebration at Kamloops City Hall at 3:00 PM.
4. Participate in our Silent Auction for the TRU Stand with Ukraine Scholarship Fund at Hills of Peace Lutheran Church from 4:00 PM.
5. Be part of the “BC Stands with Ukraine” E-Book Launch at 4:30 PM.
6. End the day with our Independence Day Potluck from 5:00 PM.
These events are more than just celebrations; they’re a testament to the freedom we enjoy here in Canada and a reminder of what Ukrainians are fighting for. They offer us a chance to come together, share our stories, and strengthen our community bonds.
I want to remind the world that freedom is an incredibly expensive value to have. The people of Ukraine are fighting with their lives to protect their freedom and independence. It’s a sobering reality that tempers our celebrations, yet it also strengthens our resolve.
To all Canadians, I extend my deepest thanks for allowing us to practice freedom and protect democracy. It is also a challenge in Canada, and many concerns need to be addressed so everyone enjoys the full spectrum of rights and freedoms. People of Canada’s support and understanding have been instrumental in our community’s resilience and in keeping the spirit of Ukrainian independence alive.
As we look to the future, let’s keep hope alive and continue sharing freedom stories. I encourage everyone to share their freedom stories, whether at our events or in our upcoming volumes of the “BC Stands with Ukraine” e-book.
Stand with Ukraine. Ukraine’s fight for freedom is universal. The world must come together to stop this aggression, for Ukraine’s struggle is one that requires global support.
Слава Україні! Glory to Ukraine!
