Car-accessible hiking in British Columbia

After a rewarding morning of cherry-picking in Vernon, our team of four decided to embark on an impromptu adventure. I have heard whispers of a breathtaking viewpoint accessible by car, tucked away in the mountains of British Columbia. With our trusty RAV4 packed and spirits high, we set off on what would become an unforgettable journey.

As we left the orchards behind, the landscape began to change dramatically. The paved roads gave way to gravel, and soon, we found ourselves winding up a narrow logging road. Our RAV4 handled the terrain admirably, though we couldn’t help but feel a twinge of excitement mixed with caution as we navigated the steep inclines and sharp turns. It reminded me of the mountain road to Zeus’ birth cave (Cave of Diktaion Andron) in Heraklion.

The drive was an adventure in itself. We passed through dense forests, catching glimpses of the valley below through breaks in the trees. The higher we climbed, the more spectacular the scenery became. We had to pause a few times to let some cars pass and were grateful that not too many people decided to drive this road together (it is very narrow at certain points).

After some careful driving, we reached a small clearing that served as a makeshift parking area. From here, we could see a wooden platform jutting out from the mountainside. Our hearts raced with anticipation as we stepped out of the car, the cool mountain air a refreshing change from the summer heat below.

The short walk to the viewpoint left us breathless – both from the slight altitude and the sheer beauty that unfolded before us. We found ourselves standing on an old hang-gliding ramp, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff. I could not resist taking a jumping photo as we met one person who reassured me about the platform’s safety and agreed to take the photo. Not everyone chose to experience the jump. The view was nothing short of miraculous. Lakes stretched out below us like mirrors, reflecting the azure sky. The landscape was a patchwork of deep greens and blues, with tiny islands dotting the water’s surface.

We spent some time at the lookout, marveling at the panoramic vistas of British Columbia’s interior. The perspective from up here was humbling, making us feel small yet connected to the vast wilderness around us. We took a few more photos, but none could truly capture the majesty of what we were experiencing. We also stopped at a few places before the majestic lookout for those who cannot take higher altitudes (make sure you drive all the way up, if you can, for the most breathtaking views). The descent was just as thrilling as the climb, but the Toyota Rav4 managed all the obstacles.

This car-accessible hike had turned our day of fruit picking into an epic adventure. We’d discovered a hidden gem, a place where the beauty of British Columbia was on full display. As we drove back, we were already planning our next mountain and waterfall excursion, grateful for the unexpected journey our RAV4 had made possible.

The experience reminded us of the incredible diversity of landscapes in British Columbia and the adventures that await those willing to venture off the beaten path. It was a perfect blend of accessibility and wilderness, allowing us to immerse ourselves in nature without the need for extensive hiking gear or experience.

We agreed to keep the exact location our little secret, not wanting to overwhelm this pristine spot with too many visitors. But we left with hearts full of wonder and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty, eagerly anticipating our next car-accessible hiking adventure in the mountains of British Columbia.
