Where Dreams Take Root: Gratitude for Those Who Plant Seeds of Solidarity With Ukraine

As I travel and witness global solidarity with Ukraine each day, I am filled with profound gratitude. I am thankful for the caring people who remain hopeful and open their homes and hearts to displaced Ukrainians.

I am grateful to the government, business and nonprofit sector social workers and entrepreneurs who provide food, shelter, and comfort without expectation. To the teachers who nurture Ukrainian children with compassion. To the doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals offering public healthcare and healing.

I am thankful for the religious groups covering relocation costs and arranging housing, for journalists providing media coverage and standing in solidarity with people of Ukraine. I am grateful for the lawyers working pro bono on complex legal matters during displacement, for social workers providing pro bono counselling services, which helps process trauma, and for policy-makers and researchers who help to create appropriate policies to provide accessible services for all displaced populations.

I am grateful to the volunteers who donated time to run donation drives. To the celebrities using their platforms to spread awareness. To the writers and artists keeping Ukrainian culture alive. To everyone who donate to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stand in peace and solidarity in their unique way with Ukraine in their home community.

My heart swells for the families taking in strangers without question. For people on fixed incomes, they are still finding ways to give. For the struggling parents working overtime to collect supplies.

I am thankful for the kids sharing cherished toys and friendships with Ukrainian displaced youth. For the teenagers giving up bedrooms and for those learning new languages. For the young adults balancing university lives and helping with resettlements.

I am grateful for the people of Ukraine who show the richness of Ukrainian culture, language and traditions while balancing trauma and despair from being away from home. Thank you to the displaced people of Ukraine and their hosts who found ways to support them in sharing skills and gifts to help their new communities. I am grateful to everyone who allows the people of Ukraine to open new businesses, learn new skills, and provide for their loved ones in Ukraine.

My spirit soars, knowing humanity’s goodness persists in the face of violence. I will keep documenting the stories of resilience, love and care and share them with my students while looking for best practices to support displaced populations. People worldwide continue standing with Ukraine, waving Ukrainian flag, sheltering the people of Ukraine, holding space for their grief, and keeping Ukrainian light burning bright. For this, I am endlessly grateful.
