Uniting Against Hate: A Call for Inclusion and Safety at University Campuses

Statement Condemning the Hate-Motivated Attack at the University of Waterloo

July 21, 2023

The recent violent attack at the University of Waterloo on June 27, 2023, where Geovanny Villalba-Aleman stabbed the professor and two students during an in-session Philosophy 202/Gender and Social Justice 222 class, is an abhorrent act of hatred and violence. This hate-motivated act goes against the fundamental values of inclusion, diversity and human rights that we uphold in Canada.

All people have the right to feel safe, respected and free from discrimination, especially in places of learning. Attacks motivated by hatred have no place in our society. We must categorically reject violence, while continuing to protect spaces for open inquiry and academic freedom.

My thoughts are with the victims as they recover, and with the entire University of Waterloo community. No one should experience such an act of violence for studying and teaching about gender.

We must stand in solidarity against all forms of violence and discrimination. Support services should be made readily available for those affected. As a society, we need to actively foster spaces of inclusion, continue educating ourselves, speak out against intolerance, and encourage reporting of any suspected hate crimes.

I urge all institutions to reflect on what more can be done to prevent such attacks, protect vulnerable groups, and promote human rights. Our diversity is our strength. We must meet violence and hatred with compassion and justice. Working together, we can build a Canada where everyone feels safe, respected and valued for who they are.

I strongly condemn this heinous act and stand in solidarity with the victims and their families as they recover from their injuries. This attack, motivated by hate and targeted at gender expression and identity, is a distressing reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance against discrimination, bigotry, and violence. University campuses should be spaces of safety, inclusivity, and academic freedom, where individuals are free to learn, teach, and express themselves without fear of harm or discrimination.

As a social work educator committed to fostering an environment of respect, acceptance, and diversity, I denounce all forms of hate speech and violence directed at any individual or group. I firmly believe in the right to free speech and academic freedom, but this must be exercised in a responsible and respectful manner that respects the dignity and rights of others. It is our collective responsibility to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment where everyone can thrive.

Additionally, I acknowledge the concerns raised regarding the university’s emergency response process. It is crucial that we take proactive measures to re-evaluate and improve security protocols to enhance the safety and wellbeing of campus communities across Canada.

To those affected by this incident or anyone experiencing harm or discrimination related to gender identity and expression, I offer my unwavering support. I encourage you to reach out to the appropriate resources and support services available at your university campus, including the Equity & Inclusion Office, Student Counselling Services, and the Employee & Family Assistance Program or similiar supports.

We must collectively confront the rising tide of hate and extremism that threatens our communities and our values. Let us come together, as a united community of learners, to foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment where healthy debate and dialogue can take place.

In the face of adversity, let us stand strong together, supporting one another and reaffirming our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of human rights.

With respect
