Today in Kamloops, I had the opportunity to share a quote that deeply resonates with me and with everyone who believes in democracy, sovereignty, and human dignity:
“Nothing without Ukraine and about Ukraine without People of Ukraine.”
These words carry profound meaning, especially at this critical moment in history. They are not just a statement—they are a call to action, a declaration of principle, and a reminder that Ukraine is not merely a subject of international discussion but an active force in shaping its own destiny.
Reflecting on the Moment
As the war in Ukraine drags into its eleventh year (the third year anniversary of the full-scale russian invasion is happening in a few days, on February 24th, 2025), misinformation is becoming an increasing challenge, even coming from the most powerful leaders in the world. Statements that distort history and reality not only harm Ukraine’s efforts but also reshape global perceptions. That is why it is more crucial than ever to reaffirm the truth and the principles of sovereignty and self-determination.
I want to sincerely thank Michael Reeves, Anthony and Curtis from CFJC for the opportunity to discuss this in our interview today. Conversations like these help shed light on the realities of war, the resilience of the Ukrainian people, and the ongoing fight against misinformation.
Breaking Down the Meaning
This quote consists of two interconnected assertions:
✅ “Nothing without Ukraine” – This affirms that no decisions affecting Ukraine’s future, security, or sovereignty can be made without Ukraine’s direct participation. Too often, powerful nations have attempted to dictate Ukraine’s fate from the outside, treating it as a chess piece rather than a sovereign nation. This part of the quote makes it clear: Ukraine must have a seat at the table in determining its own future.
✅ “About Ukraine without People of Ukraine” – This reinforces the fundamental democratic principle that it is not just the government, but the Ukrainian people themselves who must be at the center of decisions concerning their country. Ukraine is more than its borders—it is its people, its communities, its hopes, and its sacrifices. This statement ensures that ordinary Ukrainians, whose lives are most affected, are not sidelined in conversations about their nation’s future.
Why This Quote Matters Now
History has shown us time and again that when a nation’s fate is decided by others, without the voice of its own people, the results are unjust and unsustainable. From Soviet control to modern geopolitical struggles, Ukraine has often had to fight for its right to exist on its own terms. Today, as Ukraine continues to defend itself, this quote stands as a powerful reminder that its sovereignty is non-negotiable.
For the global community, this message is equally important. It is a call for solidarity, respect, and support for Ukraine—not as a passive victim, but as an active, determined nation fighting for its right to self-governance and peace.
Why I Shared This in Kamloops
Kamloops, like many places in Canada, has shown incredible support for Ukraine and its people. Canada has a deep and long-standing relationship with Ukraine, and the Ukrainian-Canadian community plays an essential role in strengthening this bond.
By sharing this quote, I wanted to:
- Reinforce the importance of Ukraine’s sovereignty and remind people that decisions about Ukraine cannot be made in boardrooms without Ukrainian voices.
- Encourage continued support from Canadians who stand with Ukraine in its fight for freedom.
- Empower the Ukrainian community in Canada, whose voices matter in advocating for policies that respect and uphold Ukraine’s independence.
A Call to Action
This quote is more than words—it’s a commitment. A commitment to recognizing Ukraine’s rightful place in the world, a commitment to ensuring that the Ukrainian people are heard, and a commitment to standing against any attempt to dictate Ukraine’s fate without its consent.
As we continue to witness the resilience of Ukraine, let us amplify this message. Let us ensure that “Nothing without Ukraine and about Ukraine without People of Ukraine” is not just spoken but honoured in every decision, every negotiation, and every act of support.
🇺🇦 Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦
