Since Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, at least 8 Canadian citizens have made the ultimate sacrifice defending freedom and democracy abroad. As we mourn these brave human being, we honour their courage and selflessness by sharing their stories and finding ways to preserve their legacies across Canada.
Emile-Antoine Roy-Sirois – Montreal, Quebec
Killed on July 18, 2022 near Hryhorivka, Donetsk region. A 31-year-old paramedic, Emile-Antoine was known for his intellect and care for humanity. As a medic, he died trying to carry an injured American soldier to safety when their unit was ambushed by a russian tank.
Joseph Hildebrand – Central Butte, Saskatchewan
Killed on November 7, 2022 in Bakhmut. A 33-year-old veteran, Joe left behind his partner Carissa and daughter Jovi to fight for Ukrainian civilians. As a brave and selfless father, he lost his life pulling teammates to safety under artillery fire.
Grygorii Tsekhmistrenko – Rivne, Ukraine / Kinistino, Saskatchewan / Port Alice Vancouver Island, British Columbia
Killed on January 15, 2023 near Bakhmut. 28 years old, Grygorii served selflessly as a medic treating all lives, even injured enemies, with equal dignity. Known for his uncommon humanity.
Kyle Porter – Calgary, Alberta
Killed on April 26, 2023 near Bakhmut. A passionate 27-year-old military buff, Kyle creatively worked as a guitar-playing medic before being killed alongside his friend Cole.
Cole Zelenco – St. Catharines, Ontario
Killed on April 26, 2023 near Bakhmut. A dedicated 21-year-old leader, Cole quickly gained the rank of Sergeant for his brave protection of civilians. Declared a Ukrainian national hero.
Anthony “Tonko” Ihnat – Ontario
Killed on September 10, 2023 near Bakhmut. A dedicated 58-year-old aid worker, Tonko tirelessly delivered humanitarian relief until a russian shell hit his vehicle. His volunteer group Brave to Rebuild continues serving vulnerable Ukrainians in his memory.
Austin Lathlin-Bercier – Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba
Killed November 2023 near Avdiivka, Donetsk region. 25 years old, teacher Austin felt duty-bound to defend women and children in Ukraine. He then enlisted with the Ukrainian Army and began his battle.
Joshua Mark Mayers – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan / Edmonton, Alberta
Killed on November 10, 2023 near Klishchiivka, Donetsk region. A caring 34-year-old paramedic, Joshua found purpose healing others on the frontlines before losing his life.
As we grieve the unacceptable loss of these Canadians heroes, may their brave example inspire our continued support for Ukraine while reminding us that liberty and human rights bear an immense cost. By honouring their names in our communities, we preserve the memory of heroes who heard the call of those crying out for freedom and answered without hesitation, proving some sacrifices lie beyond borders. All gave some, some gave all.
To honour these brave Canadians, we can support organizations delivering humanitarian aid in Ukraine, donate to groups offering trauma counseling for veterans, establish memorial scholarships or funds for causes they championed, hold annual remembrance ceremonies, and dedicate public spaces that preserve their memory. Canada remembers.
