Accessibility is the thread that runs through all my teaching and writing. This website is built to practise accessibility by design, so that every reader can find, read and use what is here.
What I aim for
I am working toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, the international standard for accessible websites. The site does not meet every part of it yet, and I am improving it step by step.
What the site does now
- Large, clear text, strong contrast between text and background, and underlined links
- A “Skip to content” link and a visible outline when you move through the page with a keyboard
- A menu that opens with a click or the keyboard, a Site Map of every page, and a breadcrumb trail at the top of each page and post
- A reading time on every post, so you can plan your time
- A labelled search box and labelled sign-up forms
- No pop-ups that cover the page
- Pages that work on phones and tablets, and when you zoom in
- Ukrainian words given with their transliteration and a short meaning, so no reader is left out
- Email updates you choose yourself, with one-click unsubscribe in every email
What I am still improving
- Many older posts, written since 2018, need image descriptions (alt text) and clearer headings. I am adding them, starting with the newest posts.
- Some older pages and files, such as PDFs, may be hard to use with a screen reader. Ask me and I will send an accessible version.
- Some videos and podcasts linked from older posts are on other websites and may not have captions or transcripts.
Ask for an accessible format
If anything on this site, or in any DROKACADEMY book or course, is hard for you to use, please tell me. I can send a page, a book chapter or a course material in another format, such as large print, a Word file, plain text or an audio-friendly version. No explanation is needed and none is asked for.
Write to sasha@drokacademy.ca. Tell me the page or book and the format that works best for you. I read every message and will reply.
Tell me what to fix
If you find a barrier, such as an image without a description, a link that does not make sense, or a page that does not work with your device, please write to me. Every report makes the site better for the next reader.
