A Sweet Tradition at Peter’s U-Pick Orchard

Every summer, as the cherry blossoms fade and the fruit begins to ripen under the warm Okanagan sun, our family and friends make the same beloved pilgrimage to Peter’s U-Pick Orchard in Vernon. It’s become more than just a day trip. It’s a treasured tradition that marks the beginning of our summer u-pick fun, filled with laughter, sticky fingers, and buckets overflowing with nature’s candy.
From the moment we turn into the familiar driveway, surrounded by rows upon rows of cherry trees heavy with fruit, we’re greeted by Peter’s warm smile and genuine enthusiasm. Year after year, he and his partner Tanya remember us, and we say hello in Ukrainian to reconnect with Tanya’s homeland. Their family’s passion for the orchard is infectious, and you can see it in every carefully tended tree and every piece of advice they offer about finding the sweetest cherries and later peaches, plums and apricots.
Tanya holds a special place in our hearts. Her Ukrainian heritage brings something truly magical to this little corner of British Columbia. When she first told us about the sour cherries, those beautiful, ruby-red gems that remind me of my home in Lviv, we knew we had discovered something extraordinary. These aren’t just any sour cherries; they’re a piece of Ukraine growing in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, tended with the same love and care that has been passed down through generations.
The sour cherries are a revelation. Their bright, tart flavor is unlike anything we’ve tasted at other orchards, perfect for the pies and preserves that have become our family’s summer staples. But more than their exceptional taste, these cherries represent something deeper: the beautiful way that cultures can take root and flourish in new soil, enriching the communities they join.
Tanya’s warmth and hospitality make every visit feel like we’re being welcomed into family. Her presence at the orchard adds layers of meaning to our annual visits, reminding us that the best fruit comes not just from good soil and favorable weather, but from hands that tend the land with love and respect.
As we drive home each year, our car filled with the sweet aroma of fresh fruit and our hearts full of gratitude, we’re already planning next visit as apricots and peaches will ripen soon. Peter’s U-Pick Orchard isn’t just a place we go to gather cherries. It’s where we gather memories, where we connect with the land and the people who care for it, and where we’re reminded of the simple joys that make life rich.
Thank you, Peter, Tanya, and your entire family, for sharing your orchard with us, for preserving traditions both old and new, and for creating a space where families like ours can create lasting memories. Your hospitality, care, and dedication to growing the finest fruit in the valley make every visit a celebration of community, heritage, and the abundant gifts of the earth.
Until next time, when we’ll return with empty buckets and full hearts, ready to continue our sweet tradition under the Vernon sun.
