Palm Sunday🌿. Sumy Again. A Tragedy That Breaks Us — But Will Not Silence Us.

3–4 minutes

This morning, once again at 6:00 a.m. Kamloops time, I woke up to grief.

Two months ago, we gathered for an early-morning online conference on Ukrainian values in the Global World. Despite the distance, the time zones, and the war, the heart of our session came from Sumy State University. A Ukrainian colleague joined us live — steady, resilient, professional — and gently shared that just ten minutes earlier, a Russian missile had hit near their location. Not a headline. Not a statistic. A present reality. We paused for a minute of silence then, shaken by the proximity of death, yet committed to continuing — because knowledge must still be shared, because Ukraine must still live.

Today — again at 6:00 a.m. — the same city, has been hit again. This time, two Russian ballistic missiles struck Sumy’s Congress Center. Thirty-one lives lost. Eighty-four injured. Some of them are children. On Palm Sunday.

There was no military target. No base. No weapons. Only a place of learning. A place where, just weeks ago, Mychailo Wynnyckyj also sat with Ukrainian scholars together in the basement with to dream aloud about educational reform, autonomy, research partnerships — about hope.

For 4,070 days since the illegal annexation of Crimea.
For 1,145 days since the full-scale invasion.
The war continues. The missiles keep falling. And the world keeps asking if maybe we can still negotiate with the ones who send them.

Some — including the President of the United States — still believe that it’s possible to talk to terrorists. To reason with those who murder sleeping families, target schools, and rain destruction on Palm Sunday mornings. They believe — and people die. Every. Single. Day.

How long will power protect the illusion of diplomacy?
How many Sumys must fall before the world recognizes this for what it is — a war against life itself?

As Ukrainian writer Volodymyr Yermolenko so heartbreakingly wrote:

“Russia is a thanatocracy — a regime of death. They sow only death, even on Christmas, even on Easter. They have nothing else to give.”

But the People of Ukraine, allies, educators, caregivers of truth — we carry life.
The People of Ukraine and those who stand with them remember.
We resist.
The People of Ukraine will rebuild — over and over again — because life, even when shattered, rises.

To everyone reading this: do not look away.
Honour the lives lost in Sumy. Speak their names. Share their stories.
And demand that world leaders stop believing in the humanity of murderers more than they believe in the humanity of those they murder.

🕊 Glory to Ukraine. Glory to Heroes.
✊ The war did not start today. But it must end with justice.

Lebensraum.
