From Рот to Пелька: The Unexpected Joys of Teaching Ukrainian

Sasha stood before his eager students, a diverse group of Ukrainian diaspora members keen to reconnect with their linguistic roots. Today’s lesson: body parts in Ukrainian. The classroom buzzed with anticipation as Sasha pointed to each part of a diagram, eliciting Ukrainian words from the class.

“And now,” Sasha said, gesturing to his mouth, “how do we say this in Ukrainian?”

“Рот!” Sasha offered, expecting nods of recognition.

Instead, Olivia, a second-generation Ukrainian-Canadian, raised her hand. “In my family, we always called it ‘писок’,” she said, a hint of uncertainty in her voice.

Sasha’s eyes lit up. “Ah, yes! ‘Писок’ is indeed used, especially in certain regions and diaspora communities.”

Just then, Yuriy, an older gentleman who had immigrated decades ago, chimed in with a mischievous grin. “Don’t forget ‘пелька’! That’s what my grandmother would say when she told me to stop talking and eat my dinner.”

The class erupted in laughter, and Sasha couldn’t help but join in. “Прекрасно! Wonderful! This is exactly why I love teaching Ukrainian in the diaspora. We have ‘рот’, ‘писок’, and ‘пелька’ – three words for one body part, each carrying its own cultural story.”

As the laughter subsided, Sasha looked around the room, filled with warmth. “So, how do you say ‘mouth’ in Ukrainian? The answer is: it depends on who you ask and where they’re from. And that, my friends, is the beauty of our language and our diaspora. We’re not just learning words; we’re sharing our stories and keeping our culture alive.”

The students nodded in agreement, their connection to their heritage growing stronger with each word they learned. Sasha smiled, knowing that this was more than just a language class – it was a bridge across generations and continents, uniting Ukrainians through the power of words.
