The latest Stand with Ukraine newsletter is out and it’s packed with important updates, inspiring stories, and ways to get involved in supporting Ukraine during this difficult time.
Some key highlights:
- Our upcoming Stand with Ukraine Zoom meeting on Saturday, May 11th at 9am PT. Join us to connect, reflect, and discuss next steps.
- The ongoing weekly Saturday gatherings at 3pm at Kamloops City Hall to stand in solidarity with Ukraine. Your presence sends a powerful message.
- An update on the Stand with Ukraine Scholarship Fund at TRU which has now reached over 50% of the needed funds thanks to your generosity. Stay tuned for upcoming fundraising events.
- A call for final submissions to the “Stand With Ukraine: Stories from British Columbia” book project. Make sure to share your story by May 18th.
- Opportunities to get involved through the new TRU Stand with Ukraine Student Club, an upcoming park clean up event, and more.

Stand with Ukraine Zoom
Our Zoom meeting / circle of sharing and respect will be held On Saturday, May 11th at 9:00 am PT. The next one is on June 8th and July 13th Everyone is welcome. Last month I was doing Zoom meeting from Vancouver airport after long delay, so glad that this time I am home.

Kamloops Stand with Ukraine
During construction we will stand at the City Hall facing Seymour street. Every Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Thank you all for standing in solidarity with people of Ukraine and for sharing your care. Please attend our weekly Saturday gatherings at 3:00 p.m. Kamloops City Hall and/or create gatherings in your city. By standing in solidarity, you encourage others to learn about Ukraine and the ongoing russian invasion. It is critical for global solidarity. When People of Ukraine living abroad and Ukrainian Diaspora together with Stand with Ukraine communities come together it sends a constant message to residents that Ukraine needs global support.
LEGO with Ukraine
There will be no LEGO for Ukraine in May and June as I am unavailable to supervise the activity due to conference attendance and no one else steps in to help. Once I am back in Kamloops after the conference season is over we can restart the activity based on community interest.
Stand with Ukraine Scholarship Fund at TRU
Thank you to all who supported us during April 14th fundraiser. Special thank you to Barb and Lynda for organizing all silent auction items and Pastor Jane and Hills of Peace congregation for allowing us to use the space and everyone who donated items and came and generously bid. TRU Foundation informed us that now we are officially over 50% of needed funds (13K out of 25K). Thank you all who keep donating online tru.ca/Ukraine so we are on track of our target goal
Next fundraiser at Hills of Peace is on August 24th Save the date. During month of May we will be selling tickets for a fundraiser dinner in June. Stand With Ukraine: Stories from British Columbia
The book is getting bigger (more than 300 pages) and although we received only 2 testimonials we already collected stories from a two dozens of BC communities. I decided to include Google Maps images for now as it is hard to get welcome signs for all communities, but we already have more than 300 references with stories and more to come. The extended deadline for submissions of testimonies is until May 18 and we hope to do a book launch in June during fundraising dinner. More details to follow. Make sure to submit your story before the deadline so people in Canada and around the world will learn more ways how to stand with Ukraine. Your story counts. Thank you to all people of BC who shared stories and inspired local communities to stand with Ukraine.

TRU Stand with Ukraine Student Club
Sofiia Shmyhovska is leading the creation of TRUSU Stand with Ukraine Club at TRU to have a stronger Stand with Ukraine student voice on campus. If you know TRU student who stand with Ukraine please ask them to contact Sofiia: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100017208815282 Once I am back from sabbatical I will support the club too and hope we can create TRUFA stand with Ukraine committee and EDSW Stand with Ukraine committee to ensure that stand with Ukraine voices are well represented on campus.
Park Clean Up in Kamloops
We identified the Prince Charles park and plan to identify a date when local people who come from Ukraine in Kamloops to do a city clean up. Nika Malanii leads the initiative and I will send you more information and posters when ready. Ukraine’s Mobilization Efforts and the Suspension of Consular Services for Military-Age Men Abroad
Women at War
The full-scale Russian invasion affected every Ukrainian family and every woman in particular. Some were forced to evacuate to save the lives of their children. Others decided to stay despite the shelling and volunteered to help those who needed it most. And some women were mobilised for the first time, joining volunteer battalions, or decided to return to the military even though they never expected to. In this video, we tell the stories of five Ukrainian women who took up the challenge of helping Ukraine fight the occupiers in different ways: Iryna, a sniper from the 72nd Brigade who asked to be expelled from Bali to fight for Ukraine; Mariia Berlinska, an aerial reconnaissance officer who helped Ukrainian women get more posts in the army; Yuliia “Taira” Paievska, a soldier and volunteer who survived Russian captivity and now helps the families of captured defenders; combat medic Mariia Nazarova who used her visit to the United States to buy equipment for the military; and volunteer Yana Biletska who organised the delivery of international humanitarian aid to communities in Kharkiv and surrounding areas.
