Keeping Ron’s Bright Spirit Alive: Honoring My Dear Friend on January 17th

January 17th is etched in my memory as the difficult day when I learned of Ron’s sudden passing. Though six years have now passed, receiving that shocking news that Ron had unexpectedly left this world feels like yesterday. While that date marks a tragic loss, I take comfort in remembering the way Ron truly lived – with purpose, compassion, wisdom, and love – up until the very last moment. So on the 17th of every January since, I make sure to take some quiet time to honour Ron’s beautiful spirit and reflect on how he indelibly shaped my life and the lives of so many others for the better. We shared many students through working at Inner City and Aboriginal Focus Programs. January 17th represents the goodbye to my cherished friend in bodily form. But Ron’s vibrant essence carries on, surrounding me whenever I share one of our stories or put his valuable teachings into action. And for that eternal gift, I am forever grateful.

Ron was truly one-of-a-kind – always ready with a kind word, a compassionate gesture, or a helping hand for anyone in need. His spirit of generosity and caring touched countless lives over the years through his work as a social worker, educator, and mentor.

I feel so fortunate to have known Ron and to call him my friend. Our friendship blossomed through our shared passion for teaching and our Ukrainian heritage. From the moment we met, there was an instant connection. Ron became an integral part of my life in Canada – he was by my side during major milestones like my Canadian citizenship ceremony and PhD defense. We created wonderful memories on trips to Ukraine where we uncovered more about Ron’s family roots. And we spent many joyful occasions with Ron’s beloved family – his wife Nancy, sons Jesse and Michael – in Winnipeg. With pandemic and full-scale russian aggression I become much less available and accessible and visit Winnipeg on a rare occasions but grateful for Facebook connection!

In big and small ways, Ron showed me the true meaning of friendship – being there for one another in good times and bad, and caring deeply even when physically apart. His constant support, through both simple check-ins and wise advice, often uplifted me. And his smile and laugh were truly infectious.

I am so grateful to have known someone as exceptional as Ron. His legacy of compassion lives on through everyone he touched. When I think of what it means to be a caring, devoted friend, I will always picture my dear friend Ron. May his bright spirit shine on. Vichnaya Pamyat’ Ron
