This year I want to say something simpler. Something that goes beyond politics and history and debate.
Today we acknowledge the struggle. The long, ongoing, unfinished work of building a world where women are truly seen, heard, valued and safe. That struggle is real: in Ukraine, in Canada, and everywhere in between.
And within that struggle, there are women who love steadily, care without keeping score, share what they have, and tell the truth even when silence would be so much easier. They do not do it for recognition. They do it because it is who they are. This day belongs to them.
This week, someone very dear to me was celebrated with flowers. Nothing to do with March 8th. Everything to do with love showed up when it was needed. That is the thing. Flowers, care, recognition, they should not wait for a designated day. They should follow love wherever it goes, whenever it is needed, for whatever reason feels true.
Give flowers on a Tuesday. Plant something that comes back on its own. Show up when nothing requires it. That is what real care looks like.
To the women of Ukraine still standing through the unbearable: you are remarkable.
To the women of Canada, in Kamloops, Winnipeg, Halifax and far beyond, who give quietly and show up without fanfare: you are seen.
To every woman everywhere who loves, cares, shares and speaks truth: thank you. The world runs on what you give, even when nobody names it.
And to everyone who stands beside them, thank you too. This struggle belongs to all of us.
