Redefining “Traditional” Values: Why Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom Must Include All

4–6 minutes

The recent Kyiv Pride march on June 14, 2025, with over 1,500 participants and international diplomatic support, wasn’t just a celebration of LGBTQ+ rights—it was a powerful statement about what Ukrainian freedom truly means. As counterprotesters gathered nearby, invoking “traditional values,” we must confront an uncomfortable truth: the weaponization of tradition has become one of the most dangerous tools against marginalized communities.

The Terror of Selective Tradition

When defenders of “traditional values” speak, minorities often feel an instinctive need to protect themselves—and for good reason. These voices rarely advocate for the full spectrum of historical traditions. They don’t champion the traditional values of hospitality, community care, or the rich Ukrainian literary tradition of writers like Olha Kobylianska and Iryna Vilde, who challenged gender norms and fought for women’s rights in the 19th century.

Instead, “traditional values” becomes code for selective enforcement of the past’s worst elements: domestic violence normalized as “the way things were,” alcoholism romanticized in folklore, ignorance celebrated as authenticity, and the systematic erasure of anyone who doesn’t fit a narrow mold.

For LGBTQ+ individuals, women seeking equality, ethnic minorities, and anyone daring to live authentically, these “traditional values” often translate to:

  • Social isolation and family rejection
  • Economic discrimination and career limitations
  • Physical violence justified as moral correction
  • Legal invisibility and lack of protection
  • Forced conformity that denies basic human dignity

Ukraine’s War: A Battle for the Right to Be Yourself

Ukraine’s resistance against Russian aggression is fundamentally about the right to self-determination—not just as a nation, but as individuals within that nation. Russia’s imperial project doesn’t just seek to erase Ukrainian territory; it aims to eliminate Ukrainian identity, diversity, and the freedom to be different.

When Russian propagandists invoke “traditional values” to justify their invasion, they’re using the same rhetoric that domestic opponents of Pride use. Both seek to create a monolithic society where deviation from prescribed norms is met with violence. Both demand conformity over authenticity.

The presence of LGBT+ Military veterans like Viktor Pylypenko at Kyiv Pride reveals a profound truth: those fighting for Ukraine’s survival include the very people that “traditional values” advocates would marginalize. Ukrainian soldiers are dying for a country where their families remain legally unrecognized—yet they continue to serve because they understand that freedom is indivisible.

The Real Ukrainian Tradition: Resistance and Reinvention

Ukraine’s actual historical tradition is one of resistance against imperial powers that sought to define Ukrainian identity from the outside. From the Cossack tradition of elected leadership to the literary renaissance that preserved Ukrainian language and culture, Ukraine’s strength has always come from its ability to evolve while maintaining its core identity.

The Ukrainian writers who shaped the nation’s consciousness—Lesya Ukrainka, Ivan Franko, Taras Shevchenko—were radicals in their time, challenging social norms and fighting for human dignity. They understood that tradition without evolution becomes stagnation, and that protecting culture means protecting the right of each generation to contribute to its growth.

Why Pride Is Perfectly Timed

Critics who argue that Pride isn’t appropriate during wartime miss the point entirely. This war is about freedom—the freedom to be Ukrainian rather than what Moscow dictates, the freedom to speak Ukrainian rather than Russian, and yes, the freedom to love whom you choose and express your authentic self.

If Ukraine wins this war but loses its soul to the same intolerance that characterizes its aggressor, what exactly will have been won? The soldiers dying for Ukrainian freedom deserve to know they’re fighting for a country where their children—all their children—can live with dignity.

Moving Forward: Inclusive Patriotism

Ukraine’s path to victory requires rejecting the false choice between tradition and progress. Real Ukrainian patriotism means:

  • Honoring historical struggles for freedom while learning from past injustices
  • Recognizing that Ukrainian identity is diverse and always has been
  • Understanding that protecting minorities strengthens the entire nation
  • Refusing to let “traditional values” become a weapon against the vulnerable

The 20,000 hryvnia raised at Kyiv Pride for military drones perfectly symbolizes this synthesis: LGBTQ+ Ukrainians funding the defense of a country that doesn’t yet fully recognize their rights, because they believe in the Ukraine that could be.

Choose Your Tradition

Every Ukrainian faces a choice about which traditions to carry forward. Will it be the tradition of imperial submission, where difference is crushed and conformity enforced? Or will it be the tradition of resistance, creativity, and the radical belief that every person deserves dignity?

The counterprotesters at Kyiv Pride and the Russian forces at Ukraine’s borders represent the same impulse: the fear of diversity, the hatred of difference, the desire to reduce human complexity to simple categories that can be controlled.

Ukraine’s victory will be measured not just by territorial integrity, but by its ability to create a society where a gay soldier can serve openly, where a transgender student can attend university safely, where a woman can lead without apology, and where tradition means the courage to become who you truly are.

The march continues. The choice is ours.
