Why BC’s Public Education System Needs Immediate Investment

Overview

British Columbia’s public schools are facing a serious funding crisis. Teachers, support staff, and families are raising concerns that essential educational supports are being cut or severely reduced, while the needs of students continue to grow. This situation affects all of us—not just students and educators, but the future of our province.

What Are the Key Issues?

  1. Staffing Shortages
Many schools are operating with too few teachers, educational assistants, and specialists. This makes it difficult to meet the learning needs of all students, especially those with diverse learning styles, disabilities, or language needs.
  2. Underfunded Inclusive Education
Support services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and behavioural interventions are limited or unavailable in many areas. This leads to inequitable access to education and places additional strain on classroom teachers.
  3. Overreliance on Parent Fundraising
Parent Advisory Councils (PACs) are increasingly being asked to fund basic classroom needs such as art supplies, books, and even learning tools for students with disabilities. This creates significant inequalities between schools in different communities.
  4. Cuts to Essential Programs
Music, fine arts, early learning programs (such as StrongStart), and mental health services are being reduced or eliminated due to budget shortfalls.
  5. Impact on Teachers and Students
Teachers are stretched thin, often using their own resources to fill gaps. Students who need more time, attention, or specialized support are not receiving it. The result is a school system that is doing more with less—but at a high cost to everyone involved.

Why It Matters

An underfunded education system affects long-term outcomes for children and youth. When students do not receive the support they need, the result is increased pressure on health care, social services, and the economy. Investing in education is one of the most effective ways to reduce future public costs and build a stronger, healthier society.

What Needs to Change

  • Adjust school funding to reflect inflation and increased student needs
  • Fully fund inclusive education and mental health supports
  • Hire and retain qualified staff by ensuring fair wages and manageable workloads
  • Stop cuts to programming and ensure equal access to essential resources across all districts
