There are people in this world whose presence leaves a lasting imprint, not just on the institutions they serve, but on the hearts and minds of everyone lucky enough to work alongside them. Dr. Juliana West is one of those people.
As a scholar, activist, and educator, Dr. West’s contributions to the field of social work are profound. Co-author of the landmark text Challenging Oppression and Confronting Privilege, she has guided generations of students and professionals in developing a deep, actionable understanding of anti-oppressive and anti-privilege practice.
But what makes Dr. West so extraordinary goes beyond her scholarship. It’s how she embodies the values she teaches. Whether advocating for equity and transparent governance as a TRU Senator, supporting Ukraine with unwavering commitment, or co-chairing national efforts for policy change through CASWE-ACFTS, she brings unmatched clarity, courage, and compassion.
Dr. West’s work is intersectional, decolonial, deeply relational, and always rooted in a profound sense of justice. She doesn’t just speak truth to power; she works to redistribute power, ensuring that the voices of the marginalized are heard, held, and honoured.
She’s also an artist of pedagogy: her teaching, her formatting, her slides, her presence. Everything reflects care. Every student feels seen. Every truthful colleague feels uplifted. And every conversation with her feels like a reminder of why we chose to do this work in the first place.
So today, with immense gratitude and admiration, we say: Mnohaya Lita, may you have many blessed years ahead.
Thank you, Dr. West, for showing us what it truly means to be a co-creator of justice, a steward of change, and a friend in solidarity.
