Ukrainian-Canadian Diaspora Language and Culture Diploma: A Journey of Cultural Preservation and Connection

I’m excited to share with you the complete course catalog for the Ukrainian-Canadian Diaspora Language and Culture Diploma program. This comprehensive educational initiative aims to connect people with Ukrainian heritage, language, and traditions through an accessible and engaging curriculum.

The inspiration for creating this diploma program came from witnessing the incredible resilience and determination of Indigenous Peoples in Canada working to revitalize their languages and cultures that were systematically targeted during colonization. Their journey resonated deeply with me, as I recognized the privilege I had growing up in an independent Ukraine where I could freely learn Ukrainian culture and language.

This cultural exchange of knowledge preservation inspired me to develop a program that honors Ukrainian heritage while creating opportunities for meaningful cross-cultural dialogue between Ukrainian and Indigenous traditions. The diploma represents a commitment to ensuring that cultural knowledge continues to flow between generations, even across oceans and borders.

I’m curious about which title resonates more with you for the diploma: “Ukrainian-Canadian Culture and Language” (UCCL) or “Ukrainian-Canadian Language and Culture” (UCLC) Diploma? Your feedback will help shape the final name as we move forward.

For Summer 2025, I’m planning to offer select courses on Saturdays and would love to hear which ones interest you most! Would you prefer to learn about Ukrainian folk traditions, cooking workshops, language fundamentals, or perhaps the Ukrainian-Indigenous relationship series? In the fall, we’ll definitely be offering the course on Taras Shevchenko, exploring his revolutionary impact on Ukrainian identity.

My goal is to find a university partner where we can deliver these courses while creating scholarship opportunities similar to the “Stand with Ukraine” initiative at Thompson Rivers University. These scholarships represent our commitment to both preserving Ukrainian culture and supporting Ukraine’s future.

I believe these courses can build bridges of understanding while honoring the depth and richness of Ukrainian heritage. For those with Ukrainian roots seeking to reconnect with their heritage, those supporting Ukraine, or anyone interested in cultural exploration, this program offers a pathway to meaningful learning.

Which courses from the catalog most interest you? Are there other Ukrainian cultural or language topics you’d like to see covered in future offerings? I welcome your thoughts as we continue to develop this educational journey together.
