Happy New Year! I hope 2025 brings peace, health, and prosperity to all of you. First and foremost, thank you for your support and continuing to stand with Ukraine during these challenging times.

I want to apologize for any delayed responses to your subscription and unsubscribe requests. The past few months have been quite busy as I’ve been working to balance various commitments and responsibilities. I’ll be addressing all pending requests soon.

In this update, we have several exciting opportunities to share, including an extended deadline for the “Educating For Tomorrow” Conference, a fascinating Ukrainian Diaspora research presentation by Dr. Zavialov, a new online course about the History of Ukrainian Diaspora in Canada, and an upcoming fundraiser at Fox ‘N Hounds Pub. Each of these initiatives represents our community’s strength and dedication to preserving and sharing Ukrainian culture and values.

Thank you to all who submitted your stories to share at the upcoming international conference. We are especially seeking submissions focused on Ukrainian Diaspora themes for the upcoming international conference “Educating For Tomorrow: Ukrainian Values in a Global World.” In response to community interest, we have extended the abstract submission deadline to January 23rd, 2025.

Special Focus on Ukrainian Diaspora Research: We particularly welcome research addressing:

• Protection of the Rights of Ukrainian Migrants

• Ethnic Conflicts

• National Interests of Ukraine

• The Role of the Diaspora in Strengthening International Relationships

• Adaptation of Ukrainians

• Ukrainian Diaspora, Language and Culture

• Effective Approaches to Working with Diasporas by State and Non-state Institutions

• Ukrainian Diaspora during Global Challenges

• Social Risks as an Aspect of Diaspora Functioning

Stand with Ukraine fundraiser February 16

Message from Barb:

Our next fundraiser for the Ukraine Studies Scholarship takes place at Fox ‘N Hounds Pub, at the back of Sahali Centre Mall, Sunday Feb 16.  In addition to the dinner, we’ll have a small silent auction and hopefully a 50/50. 

Dine In only 4-8 pm at Fox ‘N Hounds in the back of Sahali Centre Mall 
Must be 19 or older as this venue is a pub
$25/person with $10 going to the scholarship fund, the balance pays food, staff and other overhead expenses for the restaurant.  Beverages, dessert and gratuity not included in ticket price.
Anyone purchasing 2 or more tickets is entitled to a tax receipt of $10/ticket.  Minimum threshold at TRU for tax receipt is $15.
Menu is a deluxe chicken, beef or veggie burger with mixed salad or fries.
Tickets must be purchased from one of the Stand With Ukraine group ahead of time.  We are unable to sell them at the door, though folk can pick up at the door if they have already ordered their ticket.

We have 150 tickets to sell, so if each of us who Stands With Ukraine could sell only 10 tickets, we’ll have a sell-out.  Though we don’t have exact figures from TRU as yet, I think our scholarship fund sits about $21,500, though there could be direct donations that have increased this figure.  We are so close to our $25,000 goal!!  Can we do it with this fundraiser? We will with everyone working together to make it happen.

At our first dinner at Fox ‘N Hounds, I sent out an e-mail to everyone I knew in Kamloops and had a good response.  Included was the line “if you’re unable to attend the dinner, but want to be supportive, you can make a direct contribution online at https://tru.ca/ukraine” or by sending a cheque to the TRU Foundation, ensuring it says “Ukraine Studies Scholarship”.   Several of my friends opted to make a financial donation when they were unable to attend the dinner. 

I will have tickets available at each Saturday’s Stand With Ukraine event between now and then.  You don’t pay until you get the cash from the folks who want tickets, but you can take tickets to sell starting Jan 4.  Thanks for your help in getting us to a sell-out!
