As I recently stepped off the BC Ferry in Duke Point Nanaimo, little did I know, my visit to Nanaimo would lead me to a heartwarming discovery that bridges cultures and provides a taste of home for many. By the way, BC Ferries is actively hiring, and many people from Ukraine, specifically the Odesa region, found employment with BC Ferries (see the article in Times Colonist).
Sandy’s Ukrainian Market: A Labor of Love
Nestled in the Nanaimo North Town Centre, Sandy’s Ukrainian Market is more than just a store – it’s a lifeline for the Ukrainian community and a window into their rich culture for locals. The brainchild of Sandy Kosolowsky, who has been running Sandy’s Ukrainian Kitchen for two decades, this market emerged from a deep understanding of what Ukrainian newcomers were missing most: a piece of home.
As I entered the store, the aroma of freshly made perogies and cabbage rolls enveloped me, instantly transporting me to the heart of Ukraine. Ivanka from Lutsk greeted Mama and me with a warm smile, her eyes twinkling with pride as she showed us around.
A Community Effort
What struck me most was the sense of community within the market. Sandy has hired six Ukrainian newcomers, providing them with not just employment, but a sense of purpose and belonging. I had the pleasure of meeting Ivanka from Lutsk, one of these employees. Her excitement was palpable as she guided me through the aisles, pointing out familiar products from Ukraine.
I saw many products that can be also found in Kamloops FreshCo, but there were few unique items.
More Than Just a Market
Sandy’s Ukrainian Market isn’t just about selling products; it’s about preserving culture, supporting newcomers, and raising awareness. In the recent interview for CheckNews Sandy shared that she herself has been deeply affected by the ongoing russian invasion in Ukraine, having lost 78 family members to the war. This personal connection fuels her dedication to supporting Ukrainian newcomers and maintaining cultural ties.
The market’s grand opening, which I missed, was a celebration of Ukrainian resilience and culture. The checknews reported that Vesna Ukrainian dancers performed, their colorful costumes and lively steps a stark contrast to the somber reality they represent. As Leanne Pacholok, Vesna’s Artistic Director, poignantly stated in the interview, “Just to get the word out there that this crazy war is still happening. People we know personally who are fighting and people who aren’t coming back.”
A Taste of Ukraine in Nanaimo
From authentic imports to homemade delicacies like perogies, cabbage rolls, and borscht, Sandy’s Ukrainian Market offers a true taste of Ukraine. It’s a haven for the approximately 2,000 Ukrainians who have settled in the Nanaimo region over the past two years, and a delightful discovery for locals eager to explore new flavors.
If you’re in Nanaimo, I highly recommend a visit to Sandy’s Ukrainian Market. Open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, it’s more than just a shopping trip – it’s an experience that will warm your heart and tantalize your taste buds.
As we left the market, arms full of Ukrainian treats and heart full of newfound appreciation for this resilient community, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for places like Sandy’s. In our increasingly connected world, such cultural bridges are not just welcome – they’re essential.
