On April 6, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. local time, a peaceful gathering was held at the Altaca Conference Center Entrance in Panama during the Social Work Social Development Conference. The event served as a reminder that social workers globally stand in solidarity with Ukraine. However, it also highlighted the need for increased awareness and education about the ongoing conflict and its impact on the Ukrainian people.

Observations from the event:

  • While social workers worldwide support Ukraine, many attendees were unfamiliar with the Ukrainian flag, emphasizing the importance of continued education and awareness-raising efforts.
  • Participants who received a Ukrainian flag from Sasha pledged to display it in their offices as a symbol of solidarity.
  • Ukrainian chocolate, generously delivered by FreshCo to Kamloops and brought to Panama by Sasha, was enjoyed by many attendees, offering a small taste of Ukrainian culture.
  • Out of the 2,000 participants at the conference, only two presentations focused on Ukraine, underlining the need for more social workers and social work educators to share information about the country and its current challenges.

As global social work educators, we have a crucial role in standing with Ukraine and raising awareness about the ongoing war. Here are some reasons and ways social work educators can support Ukraine, please feel free to add your ideas too:

  • Incorporate lessons about Ukraine’s history, culture, and current events into social work curricula.
  • Encourage students to research and present on topics related to Ukraine and its people.
  • Host webinars, panel discussions, and workshops focused on Ukraine and its social welfare needs.
  • Invite Ukrainian social workers and educators to share their experiences and insights with students and colleagues.
  • Collaborate with Ukrainian universities and social work programs to establish partnerships and exchange opportunities.
  • Support Ukrainian students and scholars by offering scholarships, fellowships, and research grants.
  • Advocate for increased aid and support for Ukraine at the local, national, and international levels.
  • Participate in and promote fundraising efforts for Ukrainian organizations and NGOs.
  • Share accurate and reliable information about the war on social media and other platforms to combat misinformation.
  • Encourage our institutions to issue statements of solidarity with Ukraine and condemn acts of aggression.
  • Develop and share resources on trauma-informed care and support for individuals affected by the war.
  • Promote mental health and well-being resources for Ukrainian refugees and displaced persons.
  • Engage in research projects that examine the social, economic, and psychological impact of the war on Ukrainian communities.
  • Provide language support and translation services for Ukrainian students and families.
  • Organize cultural events and activities that celebrate Ukrainian heritage and raise awareness about the country’s challenges.
  • Advocate for the protection of human rights and the promotion of social justice in Ukraine.
  • Support grassroots initiatives and community-based organizations working to rebuild and strengthen Ukrainian communities.
  • Encourage our professional associations and networks to take a stand in support of Ukraine and its people.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from other disciplines to develop interdisciplinary approaches to addressing the needs of Ukrainians.
  • Continue to educate ourselves and others about the evolving situation in Ukraine and adapt our support efforts accordingly.

By implementing these strategies and actively engaging in efforts to support Ukraine, global social work educators can play a vital role in promoting understanding, solidarity, and action in the face of ongoing challenges. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of Ukrainians and contribute to the development of a more just and peaceful world.
