In February 2015, I shared a Facebook post expressing hope that the Minsk agreements being negotiated that day would stop the mass casualties occurring in eastern Ukraine at the time. Now, 9 years later, Russia’s invasion shows that those Minsk accords failed to bring lasting peace.
As I explained previously, the 2015 Minsk II agreement called for an immediate ceasefire, withdrawal of foreign forces, restoration of Ukrainian control along the russian border, and local elections in the russian-occupied Donbas region. However, russia violated nearly every provision of Minsk II while falsely claiming Ukraine did not uphold its political commitments.
In a recent interview with Tucker Carlson, vladimir putin continued spreading disinformation about the agreements, NATO, and Ukraine while essentially admitting his goal is to fully control Ukraine. His rhetoric rings hollow as russian forces still illegally occupy large swathes of Ukrainian territory in direct contravention of Minsk and international law.
Tragically, my hopes back in February 2015 for the Minsk process to stop the killing were naively misplaced which is unfortunately the case when one of the signatories (russia) keep lying and some people still believe putin’s lies. putin had no intention of adhering to the accords or allowing real peace. Over the last two years, his full-scale invasion has only brought more death and destruction to Ukraine’s people and land. The global community must unite to support Ukraine’s sovereignty in the face of russia’s imperialist war of conquest. Here is a summary of key points about the Minsk agreements and why the global community should never believe putin’s claims in the past and including his recent interview with Tucker Carlson as the only goal of putin in the war is to destroy Ukraine, occupy more territory and continue his war expansion that until now global community cannot stop:
The Minsk Agreements
There are two Minsk agreements from 2014 and 2015 that aimed to end the war in eastern Ukraine. Russia signed them and is obligated to uphold them, but has violated nearly every provision.
The agreements call for an immediate ceasefire, withdrawal of foreign forces from Ukraine, restoration of Ukraine’s control of its border with russia, disarmament of illegal armed groups, and local elections in the Donbas – none of which russia has done.
Ukraine has passed legislation addressing political aspects it was supposed to, but full implementation depends on russia stopping its occupation first.
The agreements do not legitimize or recognize the so-called Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics as legal entities. russia controls them and falsely claims they are equal parties.
Putin’s Claims in Carlson Interview
Putin is not sincere about negotiating peace or adhering to Minsk. His true goal is to fully control Ukraine and he is getting better to now openly stating it, as often he uses lies to make people believe his “peaceful” intentions……
His numerous false claims about NATO aggression, denazification, and threats from Ukraine are meant to justify his invasion and obscure his true imperialist motives.
His insistence on negotiating with the US instead of Ukraine shows he wants to dictate terms and does not recognize Ukraine’s sovereignty.
His historical propaganda does not change the fact russia is illegally occupying and attacking Ukraine today. The global community should focus on his current actions rather than debating his twisted version of history.
putin cannot be trusted. His words ring hollow next to his ongoing military aggression against Ukraine in violation of international law. If you have time and energy please watch any of the putin interviews to learn how propaganda works and when you hear anyone from your friends still believe what putin is saying, keep educating them. It is such a slow and painful process as every day when someone keep believing putin more people die in Ukraine and anywhere where he brings his propaganda and “russian peace” This year marks 10 years fight for Ukraine to exist from russian aggression since 1991 Act of Independence.
