Keeping America Safe Starts by Standing with Ukraine

Dr. Oleksandr (Sasha) Kondrashov

As russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues, debate persists regarding the extent of US aid provision. Some Americans question why they should care. However, robust evidence suggests ongoing American assistance directly aligns with and furthers national interests. This analysis systematically lays out 20 compelling reasons for sustained US backing of Ukraine, rooted in both ideals and strategy. It reveals how Ukraine’s defeat threatens the very precepts America claims to represent. And why preventing that outcome through resolute aid aligns with furthering peace, prosperity and democratic values across the globe. This article synthesizes that case across domains spanning security, economic, humanitarian and democratic ideals. It rebuts opposition claims systematically, arguing that various forms of Ukraine support reinforce America’s domestic safety and prosperity, uphold stated values, check aggression abroad before it reaches the homeland, and earn goodwill by consolidating strategic partnerships worldwide. Analysis suggests that rather than representing the abandonment of national interests, aid sustaining Ukrainian resistance offers a vital, low-cost investment into advancing American priorities for minimal risk. The path forward entails disciplined coordination with allies to alleviate economic pressures, refugees and violence inflicted upon innocent people in Ukraine. The coming reasons reveal how standing united with Ukraine actively defends liberty itself on all fronts:

Budgetary concerns:

Providing aid to Ukraine is a strategic investment that serves America’s long-term interests. A stable, democratic Ukraine is a beneficial counterbalance to russian aggression. It’s more cost-effective to support our allies now than deal with more significant security threats down the road.

National interest:

Supporting Ukraine supports the rules-based international order that upholds American interests worldwide—letting russian aggression go unchecked signals tolerance for autocratic strongmen that undermine global stability. Backing allies like Ukraine ultimately protects national interests. Preventing russian hegemony in Eastern Europe IS a National interest and domestic security. Ceding influence emboldens adversaries the world over. Autocrats would conclude America is too divided to respond to threats abroad – directly imperilling citizens at home. Strength supporting allies preserves stability.

Corruption concerns:

Support empowers reformers in the Ukrainian government. Reforms in recent years have dramatically reduced Ukraine’s corruption. They have instituted independent anti-corruption bodies with the power to investigate and audit—continued aid incentives further anti-corruption efforts. America has oversight processes to monitor spending and ensure accountability. Verifiable accountability mechanisms accompanying aid guarantee proper use. America’s interests lie in supporting Ukraine’s path toward good governance, not abandoning them to Russia’s cynicism. Engagement spurs reform.

Mistrust of Ukrainian government / Ineffective governance:

Perfect trust in any government is elusive; instead, Ukraine deserves support for its commitment to reforms. Perfect is the enemy of good enough – no state has flawless governance. Ukraine has shown substantial anti-corruption progress. Their embrace of transparency, anti-corruption institutions and democratic accountability highlight why they merit assistance over russian oppression. Aid incentives drive more positive change and more reforms in the future. Cooperation builds trust and remedies doubt over time. The people of Ukraine do not want to have a corrupted government as that is a way to unite with russia, which the people of Ukraine are fighting against. Change takes time, and the people of Ukraine are sacrificing their lives so their children will not live in a corrupted state but free and democratic Ukraine.

Limited impact on local/global stability:

Ukraine lies at the crux of European security continuity. Its defeat would empower russia, which would likely threaten NATO next. Autocrats everywhere would be on notice that America acquiesces to territorial conquest and human rights abuse. This change will directly imperil global stability in manifold ways lightyears beyond Ukraine. When saving billions now from not approving aid to Ukraine, paying trillions in the future to fight the russian evil empire will be the responsibility of today’s American children. The military, economic and humanitarian assistance provided has proven vital in saving lives and defending Ukraine’s sovereignty. Ukraine is still alive, as written in the Ukrainian Anthem. US assistance has already significantly impacted limiting russian advances and bolstering Ukraine’s defences. Continued large-scale aid can help tip the scales. No amount is too little when defending freedom against authoritarian aggression. Stoic Ukrainian resilience magnifies outside support – there is no such thing as aid too little against tyranny. No space exists between Ukraine and NATO – Russian forces are already on Alliance borders. Appeasement will not satiate imperialist ambitions, as 1930s Europe shows. Inaction threatens Taiwan, the Baltics, the Arctic and even the Americas. There is no distant corner of the globe the russian aggression in Ukraine does not touch.

Global / Regional responsibilities and Allies’ roles:

America has unique capabilities to lead the global response supporting Ukraine. US leadership rallies the world to stand up for democratic values. The US cannot pass the buck – shirking global security responsibilities cede influence to adversaries. Ukraine’s neighbours have stepped up tremendously but face limited resources and political capital to lead globally. America has the unique economic, military and diplomatic influence to rally partners worldwide. Just as the Marshall Plan spearheaded rebuilding post-WW2 Europe, so US strength focuses on unified global efforts today. Most US allies have provided impressive support within their capabilities. America has the unique economic, military and political strength to lead the international response. Just as the world looks to the US for security leadership, so Ukraine depends on the US resolve against russian revanchism. Nearby countries have indeed accepted major refugee flows and are aiding Ukraine substantially. America possesses enough global influence to lead the international response. Just as US strength stabilized post-war Europe, American leadership today galvanizes global solidarity with Ukraine.

Unilateral decision-making:

Collaborating with allies strengthens Ukraine’s support. Swift and decisive US leadership early in the war rallied the world to stand behind Ukraine and impose costs on Russia. When values like democracy face a threat, America must lead due to their unique global influence. Putting principles first calls others to action.

Domestic economic pressure:

Supporting Ukraine stabilizes global energy and food markets, benefiting the US economy. Limiting russian expansion protects international trade channels. It will cost more in the long term if the people of the USA fail to act now. Standing on principles has no price. The russian aggression in Ukraine exacerbates global recession risks, directly harming the US economy. Restoring Black Sea grain exports reduces inflation. Supporting Ukraine aims to end fighting faster before energy costs skyrocket further. Broader European instability drains American prosperity. Bolstering Ukraine pays dividends.

Focus on domestic infrastructure:

America has abundant resources to focus both outward and within. Deprioritizing global stability risks economy-damaging unrest that reduces resources available for investment at home. Preventing far costlier wars safeguards revenue for domestic goals. Infrastructure relies on secure trade and energy flows Ukraine aid protects.

Focus on domestic security:

Europe whole, free and at peace directly enables domestic security. Appeasement of autocrats repeatedly precipitated global wars threatening the US homeland in the 20th century. Deterring Russia now prevents combatting their missiles and cyberattacks on US soil tomorrow. Ukraine’s frontlines defend American communities.

Humanitarian concerns at home:

People of the US must walk and chew gum simultaneously – America can advance freedom abroad while tackling problems at home. Building alliances promotes lasting global stability, preventing future wars that could worsen domestic issues. Ukraine aid strengthens America’s hand locally and globally.

Unintended consequences:

No significant foreign policy action is without risks. But the dangers of russian hegemony in Europe demonstrably outweigh speculative hypotheticals. Resolute support lets putin know further aggression is fruitless. Aid carefully calibrated to Ukraine’s needs mitigates unintended risks.

Escalation of war:

Though risks exist in confrontation, history shows accommodation fails to satiate aggressive dictators’ appetites. Appeasement in WWII permitted early German expansion at less cost but invited later and deadlier escalation nonetheless. Russia initiated each escalation unprovoked – the Free World didn’t provide heavy arms until full-scale war began. Matching deterrence to aggression contains violence more effectively than insufficient action that emboldens. Doing too little risks encouraging putin and his regime while abandoning the People of Ukraine.

Diplomatic alternatives:

If russia had sought diplomacy in good faith, there would be no need to invade Ukraine, and the war would never have started. They have shown no serious interest in talks. Reasonable negotiation starts with restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Aid gives Ukraine leverage to achieve that goal. There is no negotiating with an insatiable empire expanding by force of arms.

Precedent-setting:

If America fails to lead here, it incentivizes enemies to pursue aggression elsewhere. Swaggering autocrats only respond to strength and resolution. Standing up now strengthens America’s hand with other antagonists like China or Iran.

Military assistance risks:

Ukraine needs the means to defend itself against russia’s military machine. Controlled advanced weapons aid helps Ukraine stand firm while US and NATO forces stay out of direct fighting. Not acting risks Ukraine’s devastation.

Public opinion:

Public opinion has seen a seismic shift in favour of supporting Ukraine. Recent polls show overwhelming bipartisan majority support for aid. Americans believe in defending democracy and oppose Russia’s brutal aggression. Elected leaders have to act accordingly and not play politics when the people of Ukraine are dying, and politicians are not listening to their electorate.

Strategic alignment:

Ukraine has cemented its Western alignment by seeking NATO and EU membership. Its people have sacrificed lives for the democratic freedoms Americans believe in. Ukraine’s struggle against tyranny echoes America’s ideals. Its success stems from russian authoritarian influence, advancing US strategy.

Economic conditions:

The Ukraine war is a significant factor in global economic instability. Food, fuel and supply chain disruptions hit American families directly. Supporting Ukraine aims to end the fighting faster, alleviating economic pressures at home. Investing to stabilize the world economy will pay dividends for domestic conditions. Support to any russian-produced goods is like drinking blood from the people of Ukraine. Learning the history of Holodomor to understand how the USSR was killing people of Ukraine while the world was silent is critical not to repeat past mistakes. Please don’t repeat the history. Learn from it.

Non-interventionist stance:

Supporting an independent state defending its territory against an illegal invasion upholds core non-interventionist ideals. Self-preservation is an inalienable right. Moreover, restricting Ukraine’s access to arms perversely abets russian interventionism, tipping the scales. Empowering the invaded against unprovoked aggression aligns with non-intervention. Supporting Ukraine’s self-defence fundamentally differs from military intervention and regime change operations elsewhere, which have questionable results. America’s ideals obligate standing with free peoples seeking independence. Non-intervention also demands not limiting their ability for self-preservation.

The case for ongoing American support for Ukraine is clear and compelling. Sustained assistance aligns with strategic interests, upholds stated values, earns international goodwill, and imposes minimal risks or costs. As Ukraine repels authoritarian aggression, the United States reaffirms its global leadership, backing allies with commitments to sovereignty, human rights, and the democratic rule of law. Resolute aid supports Ukraine’s brave stand and signals American steadfastness to partners worldwide. Just as US support empowered Western Europe to resist Soviet domination, American resolve today bolsters Ukraine against Russian imperialist predations. By standing united with Ukraine in a common cause, the United States defends liberty on all fronts – military, economic and moral. Now is the hour to reaffirm founding principles and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with an ally courageously confronting autocracy’s spectre. For if freedom fades from the fields of Ukraine, can its twilight be far off on North American shores? United States of America must continue their leadership and support and stand in solidarity with Ukraine and global communities that value freedom and democracy.
