Last weekend, I went to the Courtenay farmer’s market with Mama. We love visiting local markets because we get to see all the different fruits, vegetables, and other goods that the local farmers bring to share.
As we walked around, a big pile of colorful carrots caught my eye. There were the usual orange carrots I was used to, but also purple, yellow, and even red carrots! I asked the farmer about the different colours and learned there are many varieties of carrots, not just orange. I have learnt the names of some of them: Atomic Red, Cosmic Purple, Lunar White and Solar Yellow. The taste of each colour differs by variety, but there isn’t a drastic flavor contrast between them. Some varieties have a sweet and spicy taste to them, while others are sweeter than orange carrots.
This was an important reminder for me that day – that there is often more diversity in the world than we realize at first. Just because I was used to orange carrots didn’t mean other kinds didn’t exist too. The farmer reminded me to keep an open mind and always be willing to learn, because the world is full of wonderful surprises if you pay attention.
The other meaningful thing I took from seeing the rainbow carrots is that even though they looked different on the outside, on the inside they were all still carrots. With care, sunlight and water, they all grow into healthy, nutritious food that could nourish people.
People are like those carrots – we come in diverse colours, shapes and sizes, but inside we have so much in common. When given proper care, support and love, we can all thrive and fulfill our potential, making the world a little brighter for everyone. I’m so glad we went to the farmer’s market that day. Trying new things and meeting new people is the best way to expand our understanding.
