I have had the privilege of visiting New Zealand, and I was deeply moved by the incredible support I witnessed from local people toward Ukrainians. The warmth, solidarity, and genuine care of New Zealanders is something I will never forget.

Behind me is the iconic Stirling Point signpost, marking the end of State Highway 1. From this very point, the sign points toward destinations across the globe — including home. Bluff is famed for its world-renowned Bluff oysters, stunning coastal views from Bluff Hill, and the beautiful Foveaux Walkway. Standing at the very bottom of the South Island, looking out toward the edge of the world, I couldn’t help but think about how far Ukrainians have had to travel to find safety — and how remarkable it is that a country this far away has shown such extraordinary solidarity.
New Zealand has set a powerful humanitarian precedent. It is the first country in the world to officially create a dedicated pathway to permanent residency for Ukrainian citizens who arrived under the 2022 Special Ukraine Visa — a visa established just days after Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.
What happened:
On March 15, 2022, New Zealand announced the Special Ukraine Policy, enabling New Zealand citizens and residents of Ukrainian origin to sponsor Ukrainian family members for 2-year temporary visas. In August 2023, the government went further — announcing a residence pathway (Ukraine Resident Visa) allowing these visa holders to remain permanently.
Key facts:
— The Ukraine Resident Visa opened on March 16, 2024 and will close on March 16, 2026 — As of September 2025, 263 Ukraine Resident Visas have been approved, alongside 1,954 work visas and 323 student visas granted under the original program — No English language test is required — Partners and dependent children can be included — even if they don’t hold a Special Ukraine Visa themselves — After holding the Resident Visa for the required period, holders can then apply for a Permanent Resident Visa — The application fee is NZD $1,940
Why this matters:
While many countries offered Ukrainians temporary protection — and we are grateful for every nation that opened its doors — New Zealand is the first to formally say: you don’t just have shelter here. You have a future here.
This is what real solidarity looks like. Not just a temporary roof, but a permanent home for those who need it.
