The Inversion of Language: How Power Transforms Truth into Lies, Phones into Weapons, and Justice into Obstruction

Documenting the Killing of Alex Pretti and the Machinery of State Narrative Control

On January 24, 2026, federal Border Patrol agents killed Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse who cared for American veterans at the Minneapolis VA hospital. What followed was a precise demonstration of how authoritarian power operates: not just through violence, but through the systematic inversion of language itself.

The Precise Mechanics of Narrative Inversion

A Phone Becomes a Gun

What the administration said: Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated that “an individual approached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun” (WCCO Staff, 2026).

What the videos show: BBC Verify analyzed seven videos and confirmed Pretti “was holding his phone in his right hand—not a gun. His left hand was empty” (BBC News, 2026).

What a sworn witness stated: “The man did not approach the agents with a gun. He approached them with a camera” (WCCO Staff, 2026).

What his parents said: “Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed” (Reddit, 2026).

A phone—a device for documenting, for recording, for bearing witness—was transformed into a weapon. The act of filming became an act of armed aggression.

Helping a Woman Becomes “Maximum Damage”

What the administration said: Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed Pretti “reacted violently” and that “it looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement” (WCCO Staff, 2026). Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino echoed that Pretti “wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement” (WCCO Staff, 2026).

What the videos show: BBC Verify documented that when an agent pushed a woman to the ground, “Pretti stood between them and the agent while filming. The agent pepper-sprayed Pretti in the face. Pretti raised his hand defensively, turned away, pocketed his phone, and started helping the woman on the ground as the agent continued spraying” (BBC News, 2026).

What his parents said: “I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman” (Reddit, 2026).

A man helping a woman who had been knocked down—his hand raised defensively while being pepper-sprayed—was characterized as someone intending to “massacre” law enforcement.

“Defensive Shots” Against a Disarmed Man

What the administration said: Noem stated that “fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots” (WCCO Staff, 2026).

What the videos show: BBC Verify confirmed that after agents wrestled Pretti to the ground, “an agent in a grey jacket can be seen reaching to remove something from Pretti’s waist… The agent with the grey jacket turns away from Pretti, now holding what appears to be a pistol in his right hand which was previously empty. But less than a second after this, an agent shoots Pretti” (BBC News, 2026).

The gun had already been removed from Pretti’s body. He was disarmed. Then they shot him ten times. This was called “defensive.”

Investigation Becomes Obstruction

What the administration did: When the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension obtained a judge’s signed warrant to investigate the crime scene, federal agents blocked them. “When our team arrived, they were blocked by federal agents,” said BCA Superintendent Drew Evans (WCCO Staff, 2026).

What the administration said: The U.S. Justice Department announced it was investigating Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, accusing them of “obstructing ICE” (BBC News, 2026).

State officials attempting to investigate a killing through proper legal channels were blocked. Then those same officials were accused of obstruction. The investigators became the investigated. Legal process became interference.

Truth-Telling Becomes Insurrection

What state officials said: Governor Walz, after reviewing video evidence, stated the federal government’s account was “nonsense” and “lies.” “What I see with my eyes and what you’re going to see with your eyes makes that pretty hard to believe” (WCCO Staff, 2026).

What the administration said: President Trump accused Walz and Frey of “inciting insurrection with their pompous, dangerous, and arrogant rhetoric” (WCCO Staff, 2026). Vice President JD Vance accused “local authorities” of working with “far left agitators” (WCCO Staff, 2026).

Stating what the videos clearly showed—that the federal narrative was false—was reframed as inciting insurrection. Describing documented reality became dangerous rhetoric.

Constitutional Rights Become Terrorism

What the law says: The Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms. Minnesota law permits licensed concealed carry. The First Amendment protects the right to protest and to film law enforcement.

What officials confirmed: Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated Pretti was “a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry” who “did not violate” state gun laws. He noted Pretti “was present exercising his First Amendment rights to record law enforcement activity and also exercising his Second Amendment rights to lawfully be armed in a public space” (WCCO Staff, 2026).

What the administration said: Noem stated: “I don’t know of any peaceful protester that shows up with a gun and ammunition rather than a sign” (WCCO Staff, 2026). Border Patrol Commander Bovino claimed Second Amendment rights “don’t count when you riot… and disrupt law enforcement” (BBC News, 2026).

Constitutional rights—explicitly enumerated, legally exercised—were declared void. A licensed gun owner exercising his rights became, by definition, not peaceful.

The Family’s Testimony

Alex Pretti’s parents had spoken with him about protesting just two weeks before his death:

“We had this discussion with him two weeks ago or so, you know, that go ahead and protest, but do not engage, do not do anything stupid, basically,” his father Michael Pretti told the Associated Press. “And he said he knows that. He knew that.” (BBC News, 2026)

His family confirmed he owned a handgun legally but had never known him to carry it. His ex-wife said “he was someone who might shout at law enforcement officers at a protest, but she’d never known him to be physically confrontational” (BBC News, 2026).

Their statement pleaded for truth against the machinery of lies:

“We are heartbroken but also very angry.

Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman.

The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed.

Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you.” (Reddit, 2026; WCCO Staff, 2026)

The Suppression of Evidence

To maintain the false narrative, evidence must be controlled. When the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension arrived with a judge’s warrant, they were turned away. A federal judge—appointed by Trump himself during his first term—had to issue a temporary restraining order just to prevent the Department of Homeland Security from “altering or destroying evidence” (WCCO Staff, 2026; BBC News, 2026).

As Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison stated: “Federal agents are not above the law and Alex Pretti is certainly not beneath it” (BBC News, 2026).

The Body Count

Minneapolis Police Chief O’Hara provided the stark arithmetic: “This is the third shooting now in less than three weeks” by federal agents. Of the three homicides in Minneapolis in 2026, “two of those were carried out by federal immigration enforcement agents” (WCCO Staff, 2026).

“The Minneapolis Police Department went the entire year last year recovering about 900 guns from the street, arresting hundreds and hundreds of violent offenders, and we didn’t shoot anyone,” O’Hara said (WCCO Staff, 2026).

The Dictionary of Inversion

To understand what is happening in America, one must learn the new vocabulary:

RealityOfficial Language
PhoneGun
FilmingArmed approach
Helping a fallen womanViolent resistance
Wanting to massacreDisarmed, shot in the back
Defensive shotsTen bullets into an unarmed man
Legal investigationObstruction
Stating documented factsInciting insurrection
Constitutional rightsTerrorism
WitnessesAgitators
EvidenceMaterial to be destroyed

Why This Must Be Documented

The videos exist. The sworn statements exist. The timestamps exist. The multiple angles exist.

A doctor who performed CPR on Pretti submitted an affidavit: “From what I could tell the victim was not actively threatening ICE agents or the public. He was just yelling at the agents because he objected to ICE’s presence in our city.” The doctor found “at least three bullet wounds in his back” (BBC News, 2026).

When language itself is weaponized—when phones become guns, when helping becomes attacking, when truth becomes insurrection—the only defense is meticulous, timestamped, multi-angle documentation.

Alex Pretti’s parents asked: “Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man.”

The truth is this: A good man with a phone tried to help a woman who had been knocked down. For this, he was pepper-sprayed, tackled, disarmed, and shot ten times. Then the government called his phone a gun, his help an attack, and his death a defensive necessity.

The videos show otherwise. The witnesses testify otherwise. The evidence—what remains of it, what hasn’t been destroyed—shows otherwise.

This is what is happening in America. Document everything.
